Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by compounding. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: cine- comb. form, -phile comb. form; French cinéphile.
Etymology: Partly < cine- comb. form + -phile comb. form, and partly (in later use) < French cinéphile film enthusiast (1970) < ciné- (see cine- comb. form) + -phile -phile comb. form. Compare earlier cinemaphile n.
A film lover; a person who is enthusiastically interested in and knowledgeable about cinema; a cineaste. Cf. cinemaphile n.
