Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish ciotóg.
Etymology: < Irish ciotóg left hand (1645 or earlier), left-handed person (1901 or earlier), apparently < an unattested cognate of Welsh chwith left (probably < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin scaevus left: see scaevity n.) + Irish -óg, suffix forming diminutives.With the forms kitock and perhaps also keeduck compare the discussion at -ock suffix. The use as adjective developed within English; compare (with different suffix) the Early Irish adjective cittach left-handed (Irish ciotach).
