It is unclear whether the latter represents an attested Hebrew word, but if so, it may be Hebrew ḥalaqīm , plural of ḥēleq part (see moment n., and compare moment n. 2b), folk-etymologically associated with clacking n.
1. The action of making a click or clicking sound; the sound itself, a click.In quot. 1660, probably wordplay rather than an indication of a sense ‘a division of time’ (see note in etymology).
