Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Probably partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: Latin clīmactēr ; climacterium n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. In early use perhaps < classical Latin clīmactēr climacter n. + -y suffix3, with development of sense 1 by association with climax n. In recent use in sense 2 probably an alteration of climacterium n. with suffix substitution (compare -y suffix4). Compare earlier climacter n., climacterial n., climacteric n.With use in sense 2 compare post-classical Latin climacterium, neuter noun (1599 in a German source), climacterius, adjective (1530 or earlier), Middle French, French †climacterie (1598 or earlier).
