Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Afropithecus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Afropithecus, genus name (R. E. Leakey & M. G. Leakey in Nature 13 Nov. 143/1; compare quot. 1986), apparently < English Afro- comb. form + scientific Latin -pithecus (fossil) ape (see Pliopithecus n.).
Palaeontology.
A large extinct ape, Afropithecus turkanensis, known from mid Miocene fossil remains found in northern Kenya, and dated to between 16 and 18 million years ago. Also: the genus Afropithecus itself.
