单词 cocklebell
释义

cocklebelln.

Brit. /ˈkɒklbɛl/, U.S. /ˈkɑkəlˌbɛl/
Forms:

α. Middle English cokebelle, Middle English–1500s cokbelle, 1500s cockbell; English regional (Kent) (in sense 3) 1600s–1800s cockbell, 1700s–1800s cogbell, 1900s– congbell.

β. late Middle English kokubelle, 1500s cokobell; English regional (south-western) (in sense 3) 1800s cockabel, 1800s cockable, 1800s– cockabell, 1900s– cockabelle, 1900s– cockybell.

γ. late Middle English cockerbelle, late Middle English cokerbelle; English regional (south-western) (in sense 3) 1800s cockerbell.

δ. 1800s– cocklebell (chiefly English regional (south-western), in sense 3).

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: cock n.2, bell n.1
Etymology: Apparently originally < cock n.2 + bell n.1, although the medial syllable in early forms such as kokubelle, cokobell at β. forms is unexplained. The association of cockleshells with silver bells (compare quots. 1378, a1387 at sense 1) is echoed in lines from folk songs and nursery rhymes first recorded in the 18th cent. (but probably of earlier origin); compare:1725 Orpheus Caledonius 34 When Cockle shells turn Siller Bells, And Mussles grows on ev'ry Tree, When Frost and Snaw, shall warm us a' Then shall my Love, Prove true to me.c1744 Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Bk. II. 18 Mistress Mary, Quite contrary, How does your Garden grow? With Silver Bells, And Cockle Shells, And so my Garden grows. Form history. The β. forms show a medial syllable which is difficult to account for. The γ. forms show either suffixation of the first element (compare -er suffix1), or alternatively perhaps alteration after cocker v.1 The δ. forms show further suffix substitution (see -le suffix), probably after cockle n.2 Compare also conkerbell n. Specific senses. With sense 3 compare also clinker-bell n. at clinker n.2 Compounds.
