Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: cop-rose n.
Etymology: Probably an alteration of cop-rose n. (although this is first attested later), after cock n.1, with allusion to a cock's red comb and wattle. Compare later coxcomb n. 2g.
Chiefly Scottish and English regional (northern). Now rare.
Any of several wild poppies having a red flower, esp. the common field poppy, Papaver rhoeas.
