Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Partly also a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin -archa; Greek -αρχης; French -arche.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin -archa (in e.g. patriarcha patriarch n.; also -arches (in e.g. patriarches ), -archus (in e.g. pentecontarchus pentecontarch n.)) and its etymon ancient Greek -αρχης, -αρχος that rules, ruler (in e.g.χιλιάρχης chiliarch n., πεντεκόνταρχος , respectively) < ἄρχειν to rule (see arch- prefix); in some cases partly via Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French -arche.Earliest in borrowings from Latin, as patriarch n., monarch n.1, tetrarch n., pentecontarch n. Borrowings become slightly more common in early modern English, e.g. exarch n., chiliarch n., heresiarch n., oligarch n., etc. Formations within English are found (very sparingly) from the 17th cent., e.g. matriarch n., polarch n., dicaearch n., cryptarch n.
Forming nouns with the sense ‘ruler, leader (of a type specified by the first element)’, as cryptarch n., matriarch n., triarch n., etc.

Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀρχή beginning, origin < ἄρχειν to begin, take the lead (see arch- prefix).Formations are found from the late 19th cent., earliest (in adjectives designating vascular bundles) after German formations in -arch.
