Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: coal n., -er suffix1, coal v.
Etymology: Originally < coal n. + -er suffix1. In later use also partly < coal v. + -er suffix1. Compare later collier n.Attested earlier in place names (in sense 1), as Colresleye , West Riding, Yorkshire (1226; now Cowlersley). Compare also Colsteuorde , Lincolnshire (1086; now Colsterworth), implying a parallel formation < coal n. + -ster suffix.
1. A person who converts wood, etc., into charcoal for fuel, a charcoal burner; = collier n. 1. Cf. coal v. 1. Obsolete.
