Etymology: < Latin coarctāre (properly coartāre ) to press together, contract, confine, also to compel, constrain, < co- prefix + artāre to press close, contract, < artus confined. See art v.1, and compare French coärcter (in Palsgrave and Cotgrave).
Obsolete.
