单词 aerology
释义

aerologyn.

Brit. /ɛːˈrɒlədʒi/, U.S. /ɛˈrɑlədʒi/
Forms: see aero- comb. form and -logy comb. form.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: aero- comb. form, -logy comb. form.
Etymology: < aero- comb. form + -logy comb. form, perhaps after French aérologie (1696). In specific meteorological sense apparently after German Aerologie (W. Köpper, 1906; 18th cent. in general sense). Compare Italian aerologia (1642 in a work title in sense ‘treatise on air’, 1918 in specific meteorological sense). Compare aerography n. and earlier meteorology n.It is possible that the following quot. shows an earlier example of this word in the sense ‘aeromancy’, but if so the form presumably represents a transmission error:1561 F. Coxe Short Treat. Wickednesse Magicall Sci. sig. Av These sciences Arologie, Geomancie, Necromancie and suchlike, contayned under the general name of Magick.
The branch of science that deals with the air or atmosphere; (later spec.) the branch of meteorology that deals with the phenomena and processes occurring in the full vertical extent of the atmosphere. Also (chiefly in U.S. naval use): = meteorology n. 1. Cf. aerography n.
