Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Clinton.
Etymology: Partly < the name of George Clinton (1739–1812) American soldier and anti-federalist politician, first Governor of New York 1777–95 and 1801–4, and Vice-President of the United States 1805–12 (serving consecutively under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison), and partly < the name of his nephew DeWitt Clinton (1769–1828) Governor of New York 1817–22 (compare clintonite n.1).
