The female genital organ located in the anterior part of the vulva, which contains numerous nerve endings and plays a major role in sexual arousal and pleasure in women.The clitoris is partly covered by a prepuce formed by the internal labia of the vulva, consists of a head (glans) and cylindrical body containing vascular erectile tissue, and is attached to the pubic arch by two ligaments (crura). The clitoris of the female and the penis of the male are homologous organs. In some animals, the clitoris is traversed by the urethra as in the penis, and it is also occasionally used for copulation and giving birth, as in the spotted hyena.
