Etymology: Old English clám mud, clay, corresponding to Middle Dutch cleem clay, potter's clay < West Germanic *klaim , a derivative, with -m suffix, of klῑ- to daub, smear (root of clay n.); compare Old Norse kleima, Old High German chleimen, Middle Dutch clêmen to daub, besmear.
Obsolete exc. south-western dialect.
