Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French coq-à-l'âne.
Etymology: < Middle French, French coq-à-l'âne a burlesque or satire using a deliberately incoherent narrative (1536) < coq cock n.1 + à at + le , definite article + âne ass (see pas d'âne n.), after saillir du cocq en l'asne (a1380 in Middle French), sauter du coq à l'asne (end of the 15th cent. in Middle French), both in the sense ‘to ramble’, lit. ‘to jump from cock to ass’ (compare earlier to jump (also leap) from cock to ass at cock n.1 and int. Phrases 1d). Compare a story of a cock and a bull at cock n.1 and int. Phrases 1e(a), cock-and-bull at cock n.1 and int. Phrases 1e(b).
