单词 cockarouse
释义

cockarousen.

Brit. /ˈkɒkəraʊs/, U.S. /ˈkɑkəˌraʊs/
Forms: 1600s caucorouse, 1600s cockarous, 1600s cockaroose, 1600s cockorouse, 1700s coccorous, 1700s cokerouse, 1700s coucarouse, 1700s– cockarouse, 1700s– cockerouse.
Origin: A borrowing from Virginia Algonquian. Etymon: Virginia Algonquian Cawcawwassough.
Etymology: < Virginia Algonquian Cawcawwassough, denoting one of the elders of the Chickahominy people (1608), probably ultimately < an East Algonquian base with the sense ‘to speak’ + a suffix forming agent nouns. The r may have originated from a misreading of w (the letter forms are often similar in 17th-cent. handwriting). Compare the following, apparently isolated, example of a direct borrowing of the Virginia Algonquian word into English:1612 J. Smith Map of Virginia 5 In all these places is a severall commander, which they call Werowance, except the Chickhamanians, who are governed by the Priestes and their Assistants of their Elders called Caw-cawwassoughes.
Now historical.
Among certain North American Indian peoples inhabiting areas of what is now Virginia: (a title of respect for) one of the leaders or senior members of a tribe, (sometimes) spec. one who serves as a councillor or adviser; (also more generally) a person considered impressive or worthy of respect. Hence also adopted by colonists in this region, sometimes specifically to designate an official in the colonial administration. The role of a cockarouse in these North American Indian peoples and how it related to that of a werowance (see werowance n.) appears to have varied.Quot. 1624 does not clearly show use of the word in English.
