Etymology: Origin unknown.Probably ultimately < cockatoo n. or a related form in another language + a second element of unknown origin. N.E.D. (1891) comments: ‘Mr. Jamrach informs us that he called them cockatiels, from the name kaketieljes, applied by Dutch sailors to the first specimens brought to him (c1850). Dr. J. W. Muller of Leiden says kaketielje is no regularly formed Dutch diminutive of kaketoe, but looks like an adaptation of a Portuguese diminutive (? cacatilho, cacatelho) of cacatù, cockatoo.’ No evidence for these or similar forms has been found in Dutch or Portuguese.

A slender Australian parrot, Nymphicus hollandicus, having an erectile crest and predominantly grey plumage with (in the male) a yellow and orange face, popular as a cage bird.Now regarded as the smallest member of the cockatoo family ( Cacatuidae).
