The nettle cell (urticating, or thread cell) of the Cœlenterata (jellyfish, hydra, etc.), in which their power of stinging resides: usually called nematocyst. Hence [combining form cnido-] , ˈcnidoblast n. [Greek βλαστός germ] the cell in which a nematocyst is developed. ˈcnidocell n. = cnida n. ˈcnidocil n. [ < Latin cilium, compare cil n.] the external irritable ciliary process of a cnidoblast. ˈcnidocyst n. a nematocyst. cniˈdogenous adj. producing or containing nematocysts. ˈcnidophore n. [Greek -ϕορος bearing] a process bearing a ‘battery’ of cnidoblasts. ˈcnidosac n. the dilated middle part of a tentillum in certain Siphonophora.
