Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Partly also a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin -archia; Greek -αρχία; French -archie.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin -archia (in e.g. monarchia monarchy n.) and its etymon ancient Greek -αρχία (in e.g. μοναρχία ) government < ἀρχός ruler (see -arch comb. form1) + -ία -y suffix2, in some cases partly via Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French -archie.Earliest in borrowings from Latin and French, as hierarchy n., monarchy n., tetrarchy n., etc., most of which correspond to earlier nouns in -arch comb. form1. Formations within English are found (very sparingly) from the 17th cent., e.g. plutarchy n., and from the 18th cent. on stems not ultimately of Greek origin, e.g. Whigarchy n., squirearchy n.1, etc.
Forming nouns with the sense ‘government, or a ruling class, of a type specified by the first element’, as squatterarchy n., squirearchy n.1, Whigarchy n., etc. Cf. -ocracy comb. form.
