Money to provide a coat for each man furnished for military service; esp. that exacted as a tax by Charles I. when governing without a Parliament. Usually in the phrase coat and conduct money. Cf. coat n. 12. See Forster Gr. Remonstr. (1860) 225; Bruce Verney Papers Camd. Soc. (1853) 127, 289–293.
