单词 -merous
释义

-merouscomb. form

Primary stress is attracted to the syllable immediately preceding this combining form and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. pentamerous adj.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: French -mère , -ous suffix; Greek -μερής , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < French -mère and its etymon ancient Greek -μερής having (a specified number of) parts, sharing (see -mere comb. form) + -ous suffix.C. Duméril Zoologie analytique (1806) uses the terms trimérés , tétramérés , pentamérés , and hétéromérés in his classification of beetles by their tarsal segments (a method which he attributes to Geoffroy). Cuvier Règne animal (1817) adapts these to the forms trimères , tétramères , pentamères , and hétéromères , and adds dimères and monomères , though he attributes the latter to Leclerck de Laval. Words based on these, e.g. monomerous adj., dimerous adj., tetramerous adj., pentamerous adj., and heteromerous adj. are the earliest in English (early 19th cent.). Forms in hexa- hexa- comb. form, hepta- hepta- comb. form, and octa- octa- comb. form (dating from the mid 19th cent., when the element became generally productive) probably originate in English (although they have analogues in Greek). After 1900 new formations with this element are few.
