Etymology: < co- prefix + stander n., after post-classical Latin consistentes (plural) and its model Hellenistic Greek συνιστάμενοι (plural) (see consistent n.).
Church History.
A person belonging to the fourth or highest order of penitents (penitent n. 2) in the early Orthodox Church, permitted to attend services but not to take communion; = consistent n. 2.
