Etymology: < Spanish coca, < Peruvian cuca. G. de la Vega (translated by Ricaut) says ‘The Indians call [it] cuca, and the Spaniards coca’ ( Comment. of Peru viii. xv.).
The name in Bolivia of Erythroxylon Coca, a shrub six or eight feet high; hence, applied to its dried leaves, which have been employed from time immemorial, with powdered lime, as a masticatory, appeaser of hunger, and stimulant of the nervous system.
