Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese águila.
Etymology: < Portuguese águila (1515; 1620 or earlier in †pao d'águila aguila wood; now pau d'águila ) < a Dravidian language (compare Malayalam akil , Kannada agil ,Tulu agilu̥ ). Compare ( < a Dravidian language) Pali agaḷu , agaru , Sanskrit agaru (compare agar n.1). Compare also agalloch n. and eagle-wood n.In quot. 1588 after Spanish palo de águila (1583 or earlier; < Portuguese). With agila wood compare Dutch agelhout , †aguilhout , †agulhout (1642). In β. forms apparently influenced by agalloch n.
The aromatic resin or (more fully agila wood) resinous wood from any of several South-East Asian trees of the genera Aquilaria and Gyrinops; = agar n.1Cf. aloe n. 1, agalloch n.
