单词 aginate
释义

aginatev.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Latin. Perhaps formed within English, by back-formation. Etymons: Latin agīnāt- , agīnāre ; aginator n.
Etymology: Perhaps < classical Latin agīnāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of agīnāre to make an effort, to do one's best, in post-classical Latin perhaps also ‘to trade’ (in undated glossaries: the readings and interpretation are disputed) < agīna opening in the upper part of a balance, in which the tongue moves (attested in an 8th-cent. epitome of a 2nd-cent. grammarian), use as noun of feminine of an unattested adjective *agīnus < agere to do (act v.) + -īnus -ine suffix1. Alternatively perhaps a back-formation < aginator n.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
intransitive. To trade or deal in small wares; to peddle.
