Etymology: Blend of cod- (in coder n.) + dec- (in decoder n. at decode v. Derivatives).In later use sometimes reinterpreted as < co- (in compressor n.) + dec- (in decompressor n.).

A device which converts analogue audio or video signals into digital ones (or vice versa) to facilitate transmission; a device or program which encodes or decodes (and often also compresses or decompresses) digital data to facilitate transmission or storage.Codecs are often used for handling large amounts of data in digital communications, streaming, etc.
