Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin cōdicē.
Etymology: < classical Latin cōdicē, ablative of cōdex codex n. (as used in the phrase in cōdicē in the codex). Compare codies n.Compare Middle French codice book (1512). Compare the following earlier example of in codice in an English context which may represent the classical Latin phrase in cōdicē.1509 H. Watson tr. S. Brant Shyppe of Fooles (de Worde) xxvii. sig. G.iii Folysshe legistes, and decretistes yt studyeth in codice [Fr. en code], and in Institutes.
Obsolete. rare.
A systematic collection or digest of laws; = code n. Chiefly with reference to the systematic collection of statutes made for the Roman emperor Justinian.
