Etymology: Either (if singular) < classical Latin cōdic-, oblique stem of cōdex codex n.; compare codice n., or (if plural) the same word as code n.
Scottish. Obsolete. rare.
A systematic collection of laws; = code n. 1.It is uncertain whether the form in quot. ?a1500 is intended as singular or plural. If singular, it perhaps refers specifically to the Code of Justinian (compare code n. 1). Digestis new and ald apparently refers to the Digests of Justinian (compare digest n. 2b), which in the Middle Ages were divided into several parts, including Digestum vetus ‘old digest’ and Digestum novus ‘new digest’.
