单词 codswallop
释义

codswallopn.

Brit. /ˈkɒdzˌwɒləp/, U.S. /ˈkɑdzˌwɑləp/, Australian English /ˈkɔdzˌwɔləp/
Forms:

α. 1900s– cod's wallop, 1900s– codswallop.

β. 1900s– codwallop.

Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: cod walloper n.
Etymology: Apparently an alteration of cod walloper n. (compare sense 3 at that entry), probably after trollop n. (compare also dollop n. 2b, lollop n. 2).In sense 2 probably originally a euphemistic substitution for a stronger expression. Compare note at sense 2, and compare also remarks by the authors of the earliest attested instances in this sense, made in a 2005 interview carried out for the television programme Balderdash and Piffle:2005 A. Simpson in Transcript of Interview by V. Coren with R. Galton & A. Simpson (Takeaway Media) (O.E.D. Archive) 3 As far as I was concerned, it [sc. the word ‘codswallop’] was just a funny sounding name and when we used it in Hancock,..it was instead of saying ‘what a load of old rubbish’.2005 R. Galton in Transcript of Interview by V. Coren with R. Galton & A. Simpson (Takeaway Media) (O.E.D. Archive) 4 It could be a euphemism for a, for a word that you couldn't say in, on the BBC in those days, like bollocks, what a load of old bollocks..or cobblers, bollocks, anything like that, so it could be a word that erm, is acceptable in polite company. It is unclear whether the following instance (punningly after place names like Nether Wallop , Over Wallop , Hampshire) reflects sense 1 or implies earlier currency of sense 2:1958 R. Larter (title of pencil sketch) Welcome to Codswallop.
slang (chiefly British and Australian).
1. British slang (depreciative, chiefly London). An overly talkative woman, a gossip. Also in more general use, as a mildly depreciative term for a person. Now rare.In quot. 2005 in historical use.

See note in etymology, and cf. quot. 2005 at sense 1.
