1890 W. J. Purton tr. F. W. Blass Pronunc. Anc. Greek xxii. 88 Some would assume the guttural nasal, written γ, before μ and ν, on account of the traditional name agma [Ger. agma]; for in this name, a transposition of γάμμα, the sound itself ought according to them to occur. For this very reason however others emend ἄγγμα.
1957 S. Potter Mod. Ling. i. 27 The inhabitants of Birmingham..call their city [bə:miŋgəm], but Londoners call it [bə:miŋəm]... Midlanders raise the velum against the wall of the pharynx and make a plosion with the back of the tongue upon it before passing from agma to the murmur-vowel, whereas the people of London keep the nasal pharynx open at this juncture.
1967 M. Dillon & N. K. Chadwick Celtic Realms ix. 207 Richardson stresses the importance of the special sign for ng (agma).
1980 Verbatim Winter 14/2 Some, who do not believe that dictionary users will make the effort to interpret unfamiliar symbols like the long s (ʃ), IPA for the sh in shoot and other spelled forms,..the agma (ŋ), for the ng in thing, and others, continue to use Moo Goo Gai Pan transcription.
2005 J. Tromp Life Adam & Eve in Greek Introd. 39 When γ is immediately followed by another γ, it indicates agma (the sound indicated by n in the English words angle or English).
