单词 -nese
释义

-nesesuffix

Primary stress is attracted to this suffix; see e.g. Sundanese n. and adj.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: English -n- , -ese suffix.
Etymology: < -n- + -ese suffix, probably partly for euphony, after words in which -ese is suffixed to a stem ending in -n , such as Japanese adj. and n. (compare Javanese adj. and n. and its earlier synonym Javan adj. and n.) and partly after Dutch -nees (see note below). The element is especially found in words referring to peoples of Indonesia, e.g. Javanese adj. and n. (early 18th cent.) and Balinese adj. and n. (early 19th cent.), and Buginese n. and adj. and Sundanese n. and adj. (late 19th cent.), and may perhaps be influenced by Dutch models; compare Dutch Balinees , Boeginees , Soendanees . 20th-cent. formations in English are Macanese adj., Shanghainese n., and the exceptional formation Symbionese adj.
Forming adjectives with the sense ‘of or relating to (a country, region, or city)’ and nouns with the sense ‘a native or inhabitant of (a country, region, or city)’ or designating the language spoken there.Like -ese suffix the plural of the noun is usually unchanged. Unlike -ese suffix this suffix does not occur in words denoting the diction characteristic of specific individuals or groups.
This is a new entry (OED Third Edition, September 2003; most recently modified version published online June 2019).
