Etymology: < comic adj. + opera n.1 Compare later opera comique n. and its etymon French opéra-comique.Although Italian opera comica is attested with reference to comedies from the second half of the 17th cent. or earlier, early instances of the Italian term referring to dramas are probably in the general sense ‘comic work’, the usual Italian term being opera buffa opera buffa n.; opera comica in later use is usually considered a calque on French opéra-comique opera comique n.
An opera in which the subject matter and characters are usually treated light-heartedly and humorously, the ending is happy or conciliatory, and a large part of the dialogue is spoken; (as a mass noun) such works as a genre. Also figurative.
