Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin agnominat-, agnominare.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin agnominat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of agnominare to surname (5th cent., translating ancient Greek προσονομάζειν to call by a name: see prosonomasia n.) < classical Latin agnōmin- , agnōmen agnomen n. Compare earlier post-classical Latin adnominare (also annominare ) to betroth, i.e. give one's name to (Vetus Latina, translating ancient Greek καθομολογεῖν ), to name (5th cent. in Augustine, translating ancient Greek ἐπονομάζειν ). Compare nominate v. and later annominate v.
Obsolete.
transitive. To style or call instead of or in addition to a usual name. Chiefly with double object, in passive: = agname v.Not in Johnson, but in Todd (1818).
