Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French commodious; Latin commodiosus.
Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman commodious profitable (a1437 or earlier; compare Middle French commodieux (1484 in commodieusement commodiously adv.)), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin commodiosus useful, profitable, suitable (14th cent.), irregularly < classical Latin commodus commode adj. (compare also commodum convenience), perhaps via an unattested post-classical Latin noun *commodia ; compare -ous suffix, -ious suffix.Compare Spanish †comodioso (14th cent.). With the β. and γ. forms compare respectively -ose suffix1 and -eous suffix.
