Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin commissorius , commissōrius , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin commissorius of commission (from early 13th cent. in British sources in littere commissorie letters of commission; already in classical Latin (as commissōrius) designating a clause in an agreement by which a creditor could take possession of a property, goods, etc., on non-payment of money owed for it (2nd cent. a.d.); < commiss- , past participial stem of committere commit v. + -ōrius -ory suffix2) + -al suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin commissorialis of or relating to a commissary (from late 15th cent. in Polish sources; also as commissarialis : compare commissarial adj.). Compare commissional adj.With quot. 1680 (from a description of Poland), compare Polish sąd komisarski court summoned to try special matters (1543) < sąd court + komisarski adjectival derivative of komisarz commissary n.1 (1528).
