Etymology: < cohere v. + -er suffix1.
A device consisting of a number of metal filings, wires, plates, etc., in loose contact which suffer a drop in resistance in the presence of high-frequency electromagnetic waves and used as a detector of such waves, chiefly in radio telegraphy; originally, the name given by Sir Oliver Lodge to the detector in the form of a glass cylinder containing metal filings, which cohere under the influence of an electromagnetic wave.
