Etymology: < post-classical Latin agnus castus (from 13th cent. in British sources) < agnus (6th cent.; already in classical Latin as agnos ; < ancient Greek ἄγνος , name of the tree (of unknown origin), confused with ἁγνός pure, chaste, holy) + classical Latin castus chaste (see cast adj.1).Already in the Hellenistic Greek author Dioscorides ( De Materia Medica 1. 103. 2) ancient Greek ἄγνος was associated with purification.
1. The plant Vitex agnus-castus (see sense 2) or various of its parts (flowers, leaves, seeds, etc.) used as a herbal medicine, originally to reduce sexual potency or desire, and later mainly to treat menstrual and menopausal symptoms. Also: this plant as a symbol of chastity.
