Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French colorant ; colour n.1, -ant suffix1.
Etymology: Either < French colorant (1786 or earlier), use as noun of present participle of colorer ( < classical Latin colōrāre colour v.: see -ant suffix1), or directly < colour n.1 + -ant suffix1. Compare earlier colouring n. 2 and colouring matter n.
A colouring agent; a pigment, a dye.
