Etymology: Apparently < colour n.1 + -ish suffix2 + -ing suffix1. Compare earlier (with reference to metalworking) colourish n. Compare also earlier burnish v.1 and varnish v.Perhaps compare Italian colorisc- , extended stem of colorire (see colour v.). Compare also French coloris (in painting) manner of using colour (1615), alteration (with suffix substitution: see -is (see piloti n.)) of Italian colorito colour (of a painting) (14th or 15th cent.), use as noun of past participle of colorire (see colour v.); compare also French colorier (in painting) to use colour (a1668; < coloris).
rare after 17th cent.
The addition of colour (in various senses); colouring. Also: an instance of this. In later use only with reference to quot. 1646.
