Etymology: Probably partly (i) < Italian †agonisma prize in a contest (1499 in the passage translated in quot. 1592 at sense 1; < ancient Greek ἀγώνισμα ); partly (ii) < post-classical Latin agonisma (1536 or earlier; < ancient Greek ἀγώνισμα ); and partly (iii) < ancient Greek ἀγώνισμα contest, achievement, prize < ἀγωνίζεσθαι agonize v. + -μα (see -oma comb. form).
