Etymology: < classical Latin cōmoedia comedy n.1 + -ate suffix3. Compare Italian †comediare (now commediare ) to write comedies (1726), to turn (something) into a comedy (1728; 1598 in Florio in an apparently isolated attestation in sense ‘to play an interlude (interlude n. 1a)’).The source of quot. 1624 translates a French original which has not been traced; no corresponding verb appears to be attested in French.
