Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin agōnotheta; Greek ἀγωνοθέτης.
Etymology: < (i) classical Latin agōnotheta (in post-classical Latin also agonitheta, agonithetes) president of public games (attested in an inscription), in post-classical Latin also with reference to God (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian) and to Christ (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), and denoting a spiritual athlete or leader of martyrs (from 8th cent. in British and continental sources), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek ἀγωνοθέτης judge of the contest, president of the games, in Hellenistic Greek also with reference to God, to Christ, and to martyrs < ἀγών agon n. + -ο- -o- connective + -θέτης (see nomothetes n.). Compare French agonothète (1605 or earlier as †agonothete).
In the ancient Greek or Roman world: a person who presides over public games; a director or overseer of the games. Also: †a master of revels (obsolete). Also figurative of God or Christ.
