单词 condom
释义

condomn.

Brit. /ˈkɒndɒm/, /ˈkɒndəm/, U.S. /ˈkɑndəm/
Forms: 1700s condon, 1700s condum, 1700s quondam, 1700s–1800s cundum, 1700s– condom.
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown.Suggested etymologies. It has often been asserted that this word reflects the name of its inventor. This idea dates back to the early 18th cent., with the eponymous individual identified variously as a physician and a colonel:1708 Almonds for Parrots (new ed.) 6 A Gut the learn'd call, Blind; Till Condon, for the great Invasion fam'd Found out its use, and after him 'twas named.1724 D. Turner Syphilis (ed. 2) i. 84 And Dr. Sharp, as well as the Wolverhampton Surgeon, with two or three others behind the Curtain, stand Candidates with Dr. C——n, for the Glory of the Invention. However, extensive academic research has failed to identify any likely historical candidate. Derivation from the name of Condom , a city in southwestern France, has also been suggested and is formally plausible, but no evidence has been found to confirm any historical connection between the contraceptive and the city. Although some spellings appear to point towards borrowing from classical Latin quondam formerly, at one time (see quondam adv.), there appears to be no obvious motivation for this, and it is possible that such forms rather reflect association of an unfamiliar new word with a familiar one that has a similar pronunciation. Other Latin etymons have also been proposed, although none of them is convincing. It has been suggested that this word may be a borrowing of Italian guantone large glove, mitten (14th cent.); perhaps compare the use of animal skins to make fine gloves at this time (compare e.g. Limerick glove n., chicken-skin glove) and use of Venus glove in the 17th and 18th cent. as a possible euphemism for a condom (although it may alternatively show a euphemism for the vagina):1609 W. Shakespeare Troilus & Cressida iv. v. 63 Your quandom wife sweares still by Venus gloue. However, an etymology from this Italian word presents formal difficulties. Representation in print. In the 18th cent., condom was often written with asterisks, dashes, etc., representing suppressed letters, so as to avoid the charge of obscenity.
1. A thin, flexible sheath, now typically made of latex rubber or polyurethane, designed to be worn on the penis during sexual intercourse as a contraceptive or to protect against infections. Also used on sex toys to keep them clean and protect against infections.
In the 18th cent., condoms were usually made from chemically-treated linen or animal tissue, typically from the bladder or intestine. Vulcanized rubber condoms were first produced in 1855, and thinner latex condoms in the 1920s.
