Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French comestible; Latin comestibilis.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French comestible edible (15th cent.) or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin comestibilis fit to eat, edible (a636 in Isidore) < classical Latin comest- , variant of comēs- , past participial stem of comedere to eat up, consume ( < com- com- prefix + edere to eat: see esurient adj.) + -ibilis -ible suffix.With use as noun compare post-classical Latin comestibilia (neuter plural) food, victuals (13th cent.), Middle French, French comestible an edible thing, food (1486). With form comestable compare -able suffix.
