Primary stress is attracted to the syllable immediately preceding this suffix and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin -olentus.
Etymology: < classical Latin -olentus (adjectival suffix) abounding in < -lentus -lent suffix (in e.g. vinolentus vinolent adj.) with insertion of -o- probably by analogy with violentus violent adj. (where the -o- is etymologically part of the stem). Compare -ulent suffix.
(Not productive in English.) Occurring in a small number of adjectives (from classical Latin) with the sense ‘full of, abounding in’ something denoted by the first element, e.g. sanguinolent adj., vinolent adj.
