Etymology: < ancient Greek Ἀλαρόδιοι (plural), the name of an ancient people (Herodotus) + -an suffix. Compare Middle French, French Alarodien (1556 or earlier), post-classical Latin Alarodii, plural (1510 or earlier).

2. Linguistics. A name given to various hypothetical families or superfamilies of languages from western Asia, particularly the Caucasus, and sometimes thought to be linked to the language of the ancient Alarodians. Now rare.
