Etymology: < Brazilian Portuguese alastrim (1911 or earlier) < alastrar to spread, disseminate, to sprinkle, to cover or steady with ballast (14th cent.; < a- , prefix (compare a- prefix⁵) + lastro ballast (probably < Old French last , Middle French, French lest cargo: see last n.⁶)) + -im , suffix (compare -ine suffix⁴). Compare French alastrim, German Alastrim (both 1911 or earlier; < Brazilian Portuguese).

Medicine.

A mild form of smallpox with a low mortality rate, caused by a variola virus of reduced virulence. Also called variola minor.
