Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin alaternus.
Etymology: < classical Latin alaternus, shrub of the genus buckthorn, of unknown origin. Later adopted as a scientific Latin specific epithet in Rhamnus alaternus ( Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) I. 193). With the β. forms compare Middle French, French alaterne (1551), German Alatern (1690 or earlier).
Now rare.
An evergreen buckthorn of southern Europe, Rhamnus alaternus (family Rhamnaceae), with alternate oval leaves, greenish flowers, and dark red to black fruit; esp. (also with distinguishing word or words) any of the cultivated varieties of this grown for ornament or hedging.
