Forms: Also 1700s coly, 1700s–1800s colley, colly, (1800s coally, coley, cooly).
Etymology: Origin uncertain: it has been conjectured to be the same word as coaly ‘the colour being originally black’; compare colly adj. Chaucer has Colle as proper name of a dog, of which collie might possibly be diminutive.
