The part of the law of the United Kingdom (formerly of England) which is derived from custom and judicial precedent rather than prescribed by statutes; spec. such law as administered by common law courts rather than courts of equity (cf. equity n. 4a) before these were combined under the Judicature Acts of 1873 and 1875.
